Lü Dǎgǔn gets its name from the soybean flour sprinkled on its surface, which resembles the dust kicked up when a donkey rolls—made by wrapping red bean paste with glutinous millet flour. Ài Wōwō is said to originate from the Ming Dynasty: its skin is made from glutinous rice flour mixed with mugwort juice, stuffed with fillings like walnuts. "Wōwō" describes their spherical shape, and the name sounds like "爱窝窝" (ài wōwō, meaning "loved dumplings") to imply affection.
