I only came to Guangzhou to do one thing! Learn the martial arts technique of Wing Chun in China

As a foreign tourist who is obsessed with Eastern martial arts, I have always listed "experiencing real Chinese kung fu" as the top priority of my life to-do list. Guangzhou, a city where Lingnan culture and modern vitality intertwine, not only hides the origin code of Wing Chun, but also welcomes martial arts enthusiasts from around the world with an open attitude. In the carefully planned 'Kung Fu Tour', I delved into the soul landmark of Wing Chun by learning and playing, unlocking an all-weather kung fu journey from morning exercises to night markets. Here is my itinerary guide, which may provide inspiration for your pilgrimage to Chinese martial arts.

Day 1: Tracing back to Wing Chun - The Kung Fu Code in Ancient Alley

08:00-10:00 | Early Experience of Wing Chun in the Morning Light - Inheritance Classroom at Ip Man Tang

On Enning Road in Liwan District, Guangzhou, a Lingnan ancestral hall style building with blue bricks and gray tiles is hidden in the market - this is the Ip Man Memorial Hall. The morning sun shines on the Wooden Dummy through the carved window lattice, and the air is filled with sandalwood and sweat. I joined a group of local apprentices for morning exercises, and under the guidance of the third generation disciple, Master Lin, I experienced the philosophical core of Wing Chun's "using softness to overcome strength" from the "two character pincer sheep and horse" stance to the "little thought" starting gesture.

Tips: The memorial hall is open to visitors for morning classes every day (reservation required). It is recommended to wear loose fitting sportswear, go barefoot or wear thin soled exercise shoes.

11: 00-13:00 | Yongqing Fang Roaming - Kung Fu Genes in the Texture of the Old Town

A 5-minute walk from Ip Man Tang leads to Yongqing Fang, a newly renovated Lingnan arcade block that houses the "Living Museum" of Wing Chun. On the side gallery of the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, I encountered an old artist demonstrating puppet shows using Wing Chun techniques; At the corner, a shop window of an independent bookstore displays a yellowed replica of "Wing Chun Secret Manual". For lunch, we recommend the "Wing Chun Theme tea Restaurant" on the street corner. Its signature dish, "Cunjin Pork Rib Rice," features crispy bones in the dishes, which is in line with the principle of Wing Chun's "Cunjin" power.

15: 00-17:00 | "Chinese and Western" Wing Chun class in Shamian Island -- Kung Fu philosophy by the the Pearl River

In the afternoon, I went to SHamian Island and booked a special Wing Chun experience class in the open-air plaza of the colonial era buildings. The coach cleverly compared and explained the "midline theory" of Wing Chun with the defensive system of Western boxing, and also used the European style columns on Shamian Island as a reference to demonstrate how to use building structures for offensive and defensive exercises. When the sun sets, hit a simplified version of "looking for the bridge" on the the Pearl River cruise ship, and watch the silhouette of the cruise ship interweave with the light reflection of the small man waist on the opposite bank, as if crossing time and space.

19: 00-21:00 | Night Market Jianghu - Kung Fu Tea and Street Martial Souls

As night falls, move to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street. In a century old herbal tea shop, order a cup of "Guilinggao+Maogen Bamboo Cane Water" fire fighting package, and listen to the boss tell the anecdote of Ye Wen's disciples opening a school in Guangzhou with Yuepu. The "Kung Fu themed night market" in the center of the pedestrian street is even more surprising: sugar painting artists use syrup to outline the Wooden Dummy pattern, and stall owners use Yongchun gestures to interact with tourists. There are even stalls selling "Yongchun Boxing Blind Box", and randomly open wooden bookmarks of different moves.

Day 2: Practical Advancement - Martial Arts Practice from Museum to Arena

09:00-11:30 | Guangdong Martial Arts Museum - Decoding the Lingnan Martial Arts Gene Bank

The Guangdong Martial Arts Museum located in Guangzhou University City can be called the "Encyclopedia of Lingnan Martial Arts". In the "Wing Chun Special Exhibition Area", I used holographic projection and motion capture technology to simulate the scene of Ip Man and his disciples practicing together; The Wooden Dummy in the 1930s and the plaque of Wing Chun Boxing Hall in the Republic of China displayed in the exhibition cabinet silently tell the centennial inheritance of this kungfu. The most stunning part is the "Sound and Light Arena" experience area, where you can play against virtual opponents by wearing a VR device. The system will analyze the quality of my moves in real time based on my movements.

Hidden play: There is a "martial arts workshop" every Saturday afternoon. You can print Wing Chun Kung Fu or make mini Wooden Dummy models.

13: 30-16:00 | "Architecture Wing Chun" of Chen Family Temple - Attack and Defense Wisdom in Brick Carving

Visiting the Chen Family Temple in the afternoon, this pinnacle of Lingnan architectural art hides the "spatial philosophy" of Wing Chun. On the brick carved murals of "JuXian Hall", craftsmen use knives as pens to incorporate techniques such as "spreading hands" and "crouching hands" into the movements of mythological characters; The pottery warrior on the roof of the house has a weapon posture identical to the 6:30 stick technique of Wing Chun. The guide joked, "Every beam and pillar in the Chen Family Temple is demonstrating the defensive concept of 'Listening Bridge'

17: 00-19:00 | Practical Challenge - "Unrestricted sparring" in the Professional Hall

The climax of the itinerary was at the Guangzhou Wing Chun International Association Training Hall. After changing into professional protective gear, I had a "light touch practical combat" with students from Brazil and Germany. When the opponent's direct punch hits, I instinctively use the "hand raising" technique to defuse the attack, and then use the "finger pointing" to counter its emptiness. Despite feeling sore all over, the coach's statement 'Wing Chun is not a performance, it is the art of survival' made me realize that true kung fu is a cultural gene engraved in the body.

20: 30-22:00 | the Pearl River Night Talk - Resonance of Kung Fu and City Spirit

After finishing the full day training, I boarded the night cruise ship at Tianzi Pier. On the deck, an old boatman improvised Wing Chun, attracting tourists to watch. He said while playing, "Guangzhou people learn Wing Chun not by fighting, but by learning how to solve problems in the most effortless way possible." This sentence perfectly reflects the openness, inclusiveness, pragmatism, and enterprising spirit of this city.

Travel Tips: Make Your Kung Fu Tour More Smooth

Language and Culture: Most martial arts schools in Guangzhou offer English teaching, but it is recommended to download the Cantonese translation app in advance to experience the unique charm of "Guangpu".

Transportation: Metro Line 6 "Ruyifang Station" provides direct access to Yewentang, while Yongqingfang, Shamian Island, and Chenjiaci can be connected for cycling tours.

In depth experience: pay attention to the official account of "Guangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage", and there are often public classes of Wing Chun or martial arts performances.

Souvenir: Yongchun themed cultural creation (kungfu biscuits made of horseshoe powder and lotus root powder) and handcarved bronze Wooden Dummy pendant are recommended.

This trip to Guangzhou, centered around Wing Chun, allowed me to touch the most vibrant pulse of Chinese martial arts. It is not only a practice of muscles and joints, but also an immersive dialogue about history, philosophy, and urban spirit. If you also long to break the label of "tourist", why don't you, like me, create your own "life anthem" between the dawn and dusk lines in Guangzhou.
